Seven Sisters of Rochdale

Known locally as the Seven Sisters, the flats at College Bank are a prominent feature in the Rochdale skyline. From the surrounding hills they really do look like a family of beehives. A home. A community, A place to live. A living place.

This signed screen print has been handmade in Rochdale from my original pen and ink drawing of the Seven Sisters.

Why did I draw it?

The backstory

Constructed in the late 1960’s, the flats at College Bank, Rochdale, are a family of seven residential tower blocks located a stone’s throw away from the town centre. Affectionately referred to as the Seven Sisters, their architectural style is a stark contrast to the Victorian town hall which stands at the opposite end of the park. Rochdale wears its buoyant and dynamic history through its buildings, that’s for sure.

inspiration

There are very few places in the town centre where you can see all seven towers at once. For that viewing privilege you have to head to higher ground. You can catch a good view from Broadfield Park, but if you head out even further to Blackstone Edge or Rooley Moor Road you’ve hit the sweet spot. It was from this vantage point that I first noticed how much the Seven Sisters look like beehives. The image of bees flying out of the towers popped into my head straight away and it didn’t take long before I’d put pen to paper.
