Inktober 52 takes all the good stuff from the regular Inktober, but spreads over fifty-two weeks instead. Every Thursday, a new prompt word is announced, and you have exactly seven glorious days to think of your response, draw it, then post it on Instagram using the official hashtag.
What is Inktober?
Inktober was created by illustrator Jake Parker waaay back in 2009. Running every day from 1 October right through until Halloween on 31 October, Inktober brings together drawing enthusiasts from all over the world to share their creative responses to a series of daily prompt words… and you don’t even need to leave the house.
The classic Inktober format is brilliant, but it’s also a thirsty beast. 31 days of back-to-back daily drawing can really feel like a marathon. Inktober52 is an amazing alternative!
I took part in the daily Inktober two years running and WOWZA, it was an extraordinary challenge. My daily race against the clock to think up a fresh idea, find a photo from my phone library, and then draw it was intense.
I’d check to see what the new word was in the morning and then let myself mull over it during the day. Creating the drawing took place at night. By the final week of October I felt like a car with flashing fuel warning lights. I had to take a couple of weeks off in November to recover.
Despite this, I still think the original Inktober is 100% a worthwhile challenge to try out, and I’d recommend it to anyone at the drop of a hat. I learnt so much about my creative process as well as being able to recognise when I was close to burnout. But what about Inktober 52?
You should try it!

Imagine all the perks and challenges of the classic Inktober, but spread out over an entire year. You can enjoy the surprise of random prompt topics AND a time limit that isn’t going to stress your love for creating.
Focus on practicing your drawing technique by relishing the extra time in between prompts. Instead of rushing your drawing in a single evening, spread it out between multiple sessions. Inktober 52 is a really great opportunity for you to grow as an artist AND engage with your fellow creatives.
