Urban Room Rochdale
Creative Documentation of Visitor Feedback

Commissioned by 'We Are Local'

In early April 2022, I was invited to engage with visitors and creatively document their feedback in the pop-up ‘Urban Room’ public consultation in Rochdale town centre.

The event aimed to collect ideas, opinions, memories and anecdotes from the Rochdale public that could then be used to generate positive change in the Town Centre area. Visitors were invited to share their insights and experiences based on five sensory categories: sight, smell, taste, hearing, and heart (feelings).

I created an illustration that collaged visitors’ key areas of feedback, both positive and negative. Based on the physical shape of the Urban Room itself, the illustration reimagines each of the feedback tables as stone sculptures with the most poignant visitor suggestions and comments collaged around them.

I produced two versions of the illustration. Visitors to the Urban Room were asked to select five colours that they felt were most associated with Rochdale Town Centre. The tapestry of colour that creates the backdrop of version two is created from the palette of selected swatches. Characters and features within the illustration are intermingled with various emoji symbols which express the sentiment carried by areas of feedback.
