In June 2021, I was invited to illustrate a double page in The Director of Public Health Annual Report 2020/2021 for Rochdale.
My commission was part of a wider creative project, led by sketcher Len Grant in partnership with Your Trust Rochdale, to explore how the arts positively impacted communities during the Coronavirus pandemic.
During the previous summer, I had taken part in an art project called ’The 19’ and produced an illustration called Unity. My creation for the project imagined what a local Rochdale sculpture would look like if its characters were socially distant. The 19 project was curated by Parvez Qadir, and it’s this project and Parvez that were to feature in my doodled pages of the Public Health Annual Report.
Len invited me to create two illustrations for the Report spread: a portrait of Parvez; and two illustrations of Jannah Hayah – another participant of The 19 project.
My illustrations of Jannah were based directly on her submission to the 19 Project – a video short about her lockdown TikTok journey. Her inspirational account showcased how she harnessed the power of TikTok to teach her family and friends how to sign.
It was great to be able to revisit The 19 again, and have the opportunity contribute to another local Rochdale arts project. You can view the full Director of Public Health Annual Report here.
