Map of Broadfield Park, Rochdale

Commissioned by Rochdale Town Hall

Rochdale Town Hall commissioned me to create a map of Broadfield Park. The map will be used in family-friendly activity trails in the park, including an educational Peregrine Falcon trail, which I also created illustrations for.

I was given creative freedom to establish a design for the park map and I decided early on that I wanted to step away from the traditional Ordinance Survey “birds eye view” style of map. These styles of map orientate the world by the North direction. Although it’s a common approach, this traditional orientation does not always accurately represent how people recognise or experience a place on foot.

“I wanted to give the map a true-to-life perspective that’s easy to read and crosses language barriers.”

My map presents Broadfield Park in 3D with key landmarks featured as black and white illustrations. I decided to feature them like this as it made them easy to pinpoint against the colour background (and recognisable with their real-world counterparts).

Broadfield Park sits on a hillside, so I orientated the map with the bottom of the hill at the bottom of the page, and the top of the hill at the top of the page. All the trail activities will launch from The Town Hall (featured on the left), which also means that the map reads left-to-right as people walk from the Town Hall to the centre of the park.

The activity trails will be enjoyed by local families and, for some, English won’t be their first language. I opted to prioritise visuals over text to make the map accessible to all ages and languages.
