If art could socially distance itself, this is what I imagine the Unity Sculpture in Rochdale would look like…
This sculpture celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Cooperative Movement, which was founded in Rochdale in 1844. The sculpture is a powerful symbol of strength in unity, and working together.
During the Coronavirus lockdown of 2020, we have all had to explore new ways of maintaining our togetherness…
… and I think many of us have come to realise that although distance may keep us physically apart, our sense of unity will never be broken.
I’ve always been intrigued by the original sculpture and have wanted to incorporate it into one of my doodles somehow. ‘The 19’ project is a collection of creative works by nineteen individuals from the Rochdale borough. Each work is the artist’s response to ‘life in lockdown’. Together, the project exists as a living document of personal responses to life during the 2020 Coronavirus lockdown in the Rochdale Borough.
