Enchanting, magnificent, towering, inspiring. The more time I’ve spent in and around Rochdale Town Hall, the more it seems to have taken hold of me. It’s easy to get used to the buildings we see everyday, it’s like they become invisible, but this one has never failed to catch my gaze. It is so large, so complex, so flamboyant that it just cannot be ignored. And that’s just the exterior… Step over the threshold into the belly of this giant gothic building and you will be greeted by chamber-upon-chamber of design and decor that is nothing short of enchanting! It is a cathedral to the people of Rochdale, a time capsule of their hardihood, pride and positive self image. This place channels so much creative energy that I bet it could burst from the rafters and illuminate the sky above.

I wanted to create an image of Rochdale Town Hall that projected the beauty and wonder of what hides within its walls. An enchanted place needs an enchanted sky, and what skyscape is more revered and fascinated over than that painted by Van Gogh. My illustration comprises of a black and white pen drawing of the Town Hall against a painted sky, hillside and foreground. Tiny pen lines and delicate shading against heavy, rolling brush strokes. It’s bright, it’s bold, it’s packed with details, it’s over-the-top – just like Rochdale Town Hall.
